(Older version pictured (v0.4-0.6), but the controls are the same)
When you switch the device on, it starts in this mode by default. If you’ve changed modes and want to return to Story Mode, simply triple-click the knob.
Story Mode runs a curated program, so you can relax and enjoy hands-free! You can still customize brightness and the rate at which frequencies change by turning the knob to adjust the setting, and single-clicking it to cycle through them.

Double-click to activate Manual Mode, which sets a steady frequency and constant brightness that you can control with the knob.
As explained above, you turn the knob to increase or decrease the setting, and you click it to change between controlling brightness and frequency.

Use four clicks to activate Bilateral Stimulation (BLS), which alternates light between each eye.
This mode cycles through the following programs, which can be toggled through with 4 quick clicks:

Five clicks activates Wi-Fi and the App, with which you can gain full control of your device!
The device will connect to a saved Wi-Fi network. If none is found, it creates its own network: SERENSPECS (Pw: starstar). Once connected, you'll be redirected to the app. For more info, see detailed instructions here
Click and hold for 3 secs to enter sleep mode. The lights will turn purple just before entering sleep mode. Also, the device automatically go to sleep after 10 minutes.
You can also click and hold for 1 second to exit current mode. The device will show the battery level (green=charged, red=low), and then turn the lights off.

The SerenSpecs are designed for customizability, based on the philosophy that each brain is unique, and to really get all the juice out of this device, some exploration will be needed by you. As such, controlling the SerenSpecs via WiFi and TCP commands is totally possible.

Prefer listening over reading? The following video walks you through everything covered in the manual — but in a more relaxed, conversational way. It’s a longer introduction to how SerenSpecs works, with all the little nuances included.
⚡ Tip: If you’re short on time, set the playback to 2× speed.
This video shows you how to connect your SerenSpecs to your local Wi-Fi and control it through the companion web app.
You’re in. 🎉
In this video, I guide you through how to use the SerenSpecs App. You’ll learn the main features and controls that let you shape your experience with the device — from selecting brainwave frequency bands like alpha (flow state), theta (creativity and sleep), and beta (focus and learning), to fully designing custom sessions by setting frequency ranges, brightness, colors, duration, and 'chaos level'. You’ll see how to activate bilateral stimulation, manage connectivity, system tools, and firmware updates directly from the app.

It uses USB-C.
I'm sure you can figure out the rest.
If you have a model from May 2025 or earlier, here´s the recommended way to charge:
(This will charge faster, and addresses the "auto-on" feature that happens when you plug it in) Alternatively, just leave the device and after about 5 minutes it will put itself to sleep.
When you turn the device is on, the battery indicator will display through the visor:
You will also see the indicator every 30 secs when no mode is being played.
After 5 minutes, the device goes into sleep mode to conserve battery. To wake it, just toggle the switch off and on again.
Keep in a cool, dry place.
Or don't.
Just don't let it get wet or too humid, and keep it away from children and pets (especially those that like to chew things)
Many users keep their pair on their desk or bedside table. That way, they have the SerenSpecs ready and handy for when it's needed most!
Not suitable for persons under the age of 18 or anyone with photosensitive epilepsy.
Whilst flicker-light cannot create epilepsy, it can induce seizures in undiagnosed children.
The probability of an adult (20+) having undiagnosed photosensitive epilepsy is extremely low (estimated at ~0.00001%)

Having issues?
Use the switch. Switch it off, then back on again.
Microcontrollers are wonderful in many ways, and this is one of them. If anything goes weird in the code, switching it off and on again causes no harm, and fixes the issue 95% of the time.

Try switching it on, then off, then on again. No specific delay required. There is a capacitance issue with some of the earlier models that means it needs to charge up for a few milliseconds before being able to start-up the device, especially if it's been off for a while (most use cases).
A property of the v0.8 devices and sooner, using the C3 chip. We want to put the device into deep sleep mode to charge. The smoothest solution is this:
You can also: switch SerenSpecs on, hold control knob down for 3 seconds until the vizor pulses purple twice, and the plug it in.
If the power switch on the SerenSpecs is on, it will charge faster. If it is off, it will do a slow over-night charge (better for battery)
Loosen the strap. It doesn't need to hug your face tightly.
The small gap under the eyes doesn't usually affect performance (except sometimes when lying down in a brightly lit space).
Let the SerenSpecs sit loosely on your nose, just like a pair of normal glasses. Movement whilst using is not recommended in any case.
That's likely due to you being on an older firmware.
Solution: Connect your SerenSpecs to your Wi-Fi and update to the newest firmware: either through 6 quick clicks on the control knob, or by pressing the button on the app.
